On Friday 5th August a group of students from Wodonga Senior Secondary College were invited to see the Australian rappers and slam poets Philly and Omar Musa perform at Albury Library. Afterwards, we completed a workshop with Omar Musa to learn more about creative writing and poetry. Here are some student comments from the afternoon:

“I learnt more about music from Omar Musa. I enjoyed the discussion with Omar about Africa and his rap and hip hop. I also met more people and had a good time for lunch in Albury.” –  Aloys.

“We worked with Omar Musa and tried to write poetry about Africa. I really enjoyed writing about anything that you wanted to do.” – Eto.

“I learnt more about ways you can write poems. Poems do not always have to have rhyming words. To be a poet you must have something on the paper and not have a blank paper in front of you. I enjoyed Omar singing the poem: Today is my friend because we do not know what tomorrow will bring.” – Mary.

“Omar Musa was really friendly and easy to get along with. I learnt to be myself and be confident in writing about my feelings. It was a really good day and I hope we get a chance to do something like this in the future.” – Leela.

“We learnt how to write poems and learnt some more words. We enjoyed seeing more of Albury, shopping and listening to Omar about his story about overcoming racism.” – Nick, Jay, Jason and John.

“It was a really good afternoon because we learnt to express our feelings. It was really nice to meet Omar and hear about his background and where he came from. His poem about Spicy Laksa reminded me of a family member who was ill.” – Mary.

“I learnt many new techniques about poetry writing and ways to overcome writers block. Omar was a really cool and talented guy.” – Erin.
