March 4 Justice event March 15, 1:10pm, Wodonga Senior Secondary College

The inaugural Wodonga Senior Secondary College March 4 Justice rally will take place on March 15 at 1:10pm at the Wodonga Senior Secondary College main flagpole. The March, a grassroots movement, calls for an end to gendered violence against women in Australian and an increase in public funding for prevention of gender-based violence. Speakers at the Wodonga Senior Secondary College include students and teachers of different genders and from a wide variety of backgrounds.

‘Our focus is safety. Safety for women from sexual assault, safety for survivors dealing with incredibly triggering conversations dominating recent weeks. I am furious that women are being treated so badly in 2021. There are young women who face harassment every day, and older women who are tired and furious that we still fighting this fight” says founder and convenor Janine Hendry.

The Wodonga Senior Secondary College rally supports a National March in Canberra where a petition will be delivered calling on the Prime Minister to act on gendered violence against women, including female Members of Parliament and staff.

Organisers and supporters of March 4 Justice are a cross section of women diverse in age, professional and cultural backgrounds. They come from all over Australia and have supporters around the world.

The March4Justice is delivering a petition to Parliament demanding action on gendered violence.

March 4 Justice is calling for

  1. Full independent investigations into all cases of gendered violence and timely referrals to appropriate authorities. Full public accountability for findings.
  2. Fully implement the 55 recommendations in the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Respect@Work report of the National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces 2020.
  3. Lift public funding for gendered violence prevention to world’s best practice
  4. The enactment of a federal Gender Equality Act to promote gender equality. It should include a gender equity audit of Parliamentary practices

About March 4 Justice at Wodonga Senior Secondary College

Wodonga Senior Secondary College have made the decision to support the March 4 Justice movement by holding our own rally on the school campus on Monday 15th March. In addition to the overarching concerns promoted by the national movement of March 4 Justice, the Wodonga Senior Secondary College rally will be calling for

  • Justice and action against gendered violence, abuse, harassment, and discrimination in the spaces and communities inhabited by our female staff, students and families, including the school campus, student workplaces, sporting clubs, and other organisations within our broader school community
  • Respect and equality for all women, including those of first nations, immigrant and refugee communities, LGBTQI+, people with disabilities, and women of all ages.
  • We call ENOUGH on behaviours that women and girls experience and witness on a daily basis in our community, including the seemingly ‘small things’.

The message of the March 4 Justice rally closely aligns with the Wodonga Senior Secondary College Wodonga Way Core values of Care for Relationships and Respect and Resilience, as well as our broader school commitment to inclusion and diversity.
