This month we celebrate 50 years of our John Galvin Hall which coincides with the commencement of the refurbishment of its interior as announced by College Principal Vern Hilditch today.

John Galvin Hall, August 26th 2021 ahead of the refurbishment to commence later this Term.

Galvin Hall, named after Mr John Leslie Galvin, was opened in August 1971. In 1970 a committee of 7 students (Helen Szabolics, Carlie Grogan, Hana Mucha, Lee Webb, Phillip Kruss, Greg Sturgees and Phillip Dempster) formed the Wodonga High School Co-operative Society to guarantee the loan from the CBA and the building of the hall commenced. The hall has since been well utilised by the school and wider community, hosting many indoor sporting, dance, music performance events, not to mention the hundreds of whole school assemblies.

From the Wodonga High School Magazine 1971
Mr John Leslie Galvin served the school with distinction for 27 years, first as an art and craft teacher and later as teacher in charge of Woodwork. Mr Galvin was active in many facets of school life. He took charge of school assemblies, was the manager of our school fete, a member of the advisory Council Grounds Committee and of the Assembly Hall Committee.

Mr Galvin made a valuable contribution to community life. He was instrumental in forming the Wodonga Apex Club, was a charter member of the Albury-Wodonga Lions Club, a former President of the Wodonga Golf Club active in his Church and, in his leisure moments, a very keen fisherman.

The esteem in which Mr Galvin was held was demonstrated at his funeral when 240 students lined Kiewa Street to pay a silent last tribute.
