Since the start of this year, Wodonga Senior Secondary VCAL students have been volunteering with the organisation Friends of Willow Park. The aim of this is for Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students learn a range of skills and to contribute to
the community. Friends of Willow Park are part of the Wodonga Urban Landcare Network and work towards improving their
park. They also focus on educating and involving the community in protecting, preserving and valuing parklands.
VCAL students have been involved in numerous activities, including mulching, planting seedlings and refurbishing picnic tables. In this experience, the students have been able to use angle grinders, drills and many more power tools.
Students have been organising a Schools National Tree Day on the 24th of July, involving St Monica’s grade 3 and 4 students. The VCAL students will be providing the primary students with a barbecue on the day, teaching them how to plant, assisting with the planting and giving them an opportunity to give back to nature.

The community is invited to come to National Tree Day, on Sunday the 26th July from 10am to 2pm at Willow Park. There will be a barbeque, coffee and cake stalls, sustainability workshops, children’s tent, information and displays and an opportunity to help in tree planting. VCAL Students have appreciated the experience of working in a local park. We have also gained valuableskills and looked at a range of career options.
