The 5th of May is Children’s Day in Japan. It is a day where parents wish for their kids to grow up strong and healthy. Japanese carp, known as koi, are a symbol of strength as they swim upstream against the current. So too is the kabuto, a samurai helmet, which helped to protect warriors.

This day and these symbols are a reminder to help send strength to all our kids who may feel they are swimming upstream every now and then.

Thankyou to the students, Lana Thorpe and Noriaki Koseki who folded the many origami kabuto to create the stunning koi on display in the library.

Also feel free to try your hand at making an origami helmet or an origami Japanese carp. The patterns are on the wall near the entry to the library and you can ask the library staff for origami paper.
