Year 10 Boys

On the 17th May, the Intermediate (Year 10) Boys played in the 2023 Volleyball State Finals at Dandenong Stadium. Our first game we came up against another country team in Holy Trinity Lutheran Horsham. The nerves got the best of us in the first set losing 15-20. The boys regained their confidence and were able to win the second set which took the game to the third and final set. The boys cruised home comfortably which brought us a victory in the first match of the day.

With a win under our belt we took on Collingwood College. They were a really strong team but we were able to hold them off and play to our strengths, winning the first set. Sadly, Collingwood College were able to get the best of us in the next 2 sets and even with strategic time-outs and substitutions, we weren’t able to slow their momentum once they got onto a roll. It was still an amazing effort to take away a set from them.

Our final game was against Melbourne High School and they were just a better team on the day. They comfortably won 2 sets and we finished the day with one victory and coming 3rd overall in our pool. It was a great effort from our Year 10 boys who showed great sportsmanship and greatly represented WSSC.

Year 10 Girls

The team travelled to Dandenong on Wednesday 17 May, to compete in the 2023 Volleyball State Finals. Thanks to Haylee Penny for all her coaching and time given to the team to develop their talents. Unfortunately, Haylee was unable to travel to the State finals and the coaching duties were taken up by student Keely Bishop. Keely did a great job staying positive and calm as she navigated the substitutions and time-out chats with the team.

The girls played Murtoa SC in Game 1. This was our game against another country school and proved to be a very close encounter. WSSC won the 1st set 25-23 and narrowly lost the 2nd set 18-20. The match went to the deciding 3rd set and continued to be close. The team persisted with their excellent serving, digging and setting up team plays. A few tactical substitutions were made and time-outs were called. Unfortunately, the team went down by the closest of margins 13-15. Confidence was high as the team proceeded to play Eltham SC who have featured in State finals over many years. The team did not get off to the best start going down 9-20 in Set 1. A few positional changes in Set 2 and the girls worked hard to win 20-17. At 1 set all, we found that Eltham re-grouped in the 3rd set to take it out 15-8.

The final match of our Pool round was against the undefeated Westall SC. We went down 2 sets to 0. This team ultimately went through to the semi-finals and won the State final.

Thank you to the families who travelled from Wodonga or visited from Melbourne to come and watch and support the team. A credit to each team member for playing the game of volleyball in the spirit of team work and appreciation for everyone’s effort.
