Dear Students and Families,
The General Achievement Test (GAT) is an important part of the VCE process for checking that VCE external assessments and school-based assessments have been accurately and fairly assessed and can be used if you have a Derived Examination Score (DES) approved. From 2022, the GAT has an additional purpose of assessing student’s skills against literacy and numeracy standards. These standards indicate whether students have demonstrated the literacy and numeracy skills typically expected of someone completing their secondary schooling – giving another indication of their readiness to move on to further education, training, or employment.
The key information is below
- The GAT will be held on Thursday 15th June in allocated venues at the Wodonga Senior Secondary College Campus. No formal classes will run on this day.
- The GAT is split into two sections:
- Section A 9.00am – 11.15am will assess literacy and numeracy skills
- Section B 1.15pm – 3.00pm will assess skills in Mathematics, Science, Technology, The Arts, and Humanities, with an increased focus on critical and creative thinking skills
- All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3-4 sequence will be required to sit Sections A and B, including Year 11 students advancing into a Unit 3/4 subject.
- Students need to bring with them- their student ID, calculator, a dictionary without a thesaurus, clear pencil case containing pens, pencil and eraser (no whiteout)
- CLEAR drink bottle with water- no labels or frosting
- Bags, food, phones, smart watches, earphones and any other electrical device should be left in your locker
- Students can wear suitable casual clothing
- Students will have access to the canteen for something to eat in the break
Students will receive a GAT statement of results which will indicate whether they have met the literacy and numeracy standards. The GAT does not directly count towards a student’s final VCE or Senior VCAL qualification but does provide an additional opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills and level of achievement. Students who do not meet these standards will be provided with another opportunity to re-sit the GAT in 2024.
Special provisions are available to students who may already qualify for these arrangements and exemptions are available for students who have pre-planned employment, an illness or misadventure supported by appropriate documentation.
Students will be provided with their individualised GAT timetable as well as the attached information brochure, which includes rules and tips.
A session will be run for students on Friday 9th June to help prepare them for the GAT during Year 12 Assembly in the Lecture Theatre period 3.
