Dear parents/guardians of students enrolled in the Industry and Enterprise program,

As an integral part of the Industry and Enterprise course, it is mandatory for students to complete 35 hours of Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) per semester.

Structured workplace learning offers students a unique opportunity to blend practical work experience with their academic studies, contributing towards their attainment of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), the VCE Vocational Major, or the Victorian Pathways Certificate.

Prior to commencing their placements, students must fulfil the requirement of acquiring two Safe@Work certificates, a general certificate and an industry-specific certificate. Students may be required to complete more than one industry specific certificate based on their placement changes. Additionally, students are expected to complete the SWL form (see attached), ensuring that all necessary fields are duly filled by the respective parties involved: students, parents/caregivers, and employers. Once completed, the form should be promptly returned to the Careers Office (C18) to check details, gain Principal approval and processing. It is important to note that if a student decides to complete their placement with new host employer, a risk assessment will be necessary, conducted by the career advisor. This process may require some time to complete.

It is vital that students refrain from commencing their work placements until they receive an email from their career advisor. The career advisor will communicate with all relevant parties involved and ensure that appropriate adjustments are made regarding your student’s attendance. Moreover, they will ensure that all necessary safety procedures are in place for the student’s well-being.

As dedicated educators, our aim is to provide students with a range of SWL opportunities. However, we kindly request your involvement in facilitating this process. We encourage you to engage in meaningful discussions with your students, exploring their interests in various industries. Furthermore, if you have any connections or resources that could assist them in securing a placement aligned with their aspirations, we would greatly appreciate your support.

Structured workplace learning can be pursued in a variety of settings, including private enterprises, public sector workplaces, community-based organisations, participation in community enterprise projects, on-campus or community-based structured student-initiated enterprise projects, part-time or casual work outside school hours, or on-the-job training as part of a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your designated Industry and Enterprise teacher if you have any concerns or queries. We are committed to ensuring a successful semester 2, where our students will have invaluable opportunities to gain practical workplace experience.

Warm regards,
Nadiene Pastras
Key Learning Area Leader I&E, WRS and PDS
